Power Rankings - Dec. 1

My wife told me that she wished she had a video of just my reactions to the 2013 Iron Bowl.  She told me it was like that YouTube video of people freaking the geek out when everybody died in that one Game of Thrones episode.  

There were some gods on Auburn's side in their miraculous 34-28 win over #1 Alabama.  If college football is nothing else, it is ritual, and all rituals are are a way to appease our gods and ask for their favor.  

Here ya go:



1) Florida State (12-0, 8-0, +25) - There were a whole host of great games on Rivalry Week - The Civil War, The Game, The Egg Bowl, The Iron Bowl, Good Ol' Fashioned Hate.  One game that was not particularly interesting was FSU-Florida, which the Seminoles won 37-7.  Florida State now gets Duke (Duke!) in the ACC Championship, and a win there should put them in the National Championship.  But what if Jameis Winston is accused of rape before then, and made ineligible by the team?  

Also, did you know that, before Chief Osceola became FSU's official "symbol" (way back in 1978), their mascot, was this dude, "Sammy Seminole":

Sammy was retired in 1972.  My favorite quote, from Wiki: "In the late 1960s Chief Fullabull emerged as a mascot during basketball games. Like Sammy Seminole, he donned cartoonish Native American-themed outfits, and performed clownish stunts. Under protest from Native American groups, the character's name was altered to Chief Wampumstompum, though this did nothing to assuage the concerns of protesters."  

Gee, what more do you guys want!!  You know racism is over, right?

2) Stanford (10-2, 7-2, +17) -  In an essay on the old Syracuse mascot Chief Bill Orange, Donald Fisher writes: "The Indian mascot continued to validate the evolutionary hierarchy linking the various undergraduate classes and alumni together.  Wildness might now be celebrated, but students still understood their world to be built upon the ideas of historical progress as well as race and class superiority." 

Wait, are you saying that the use of Native American symbols is actually a deliberate attempt to create a sense of community by instituting a racist hierarchy that permanently fixes Whiteness at the top, and seeks to justify violence against minorities through exclusion and ritual?  BUT RACISM IS OVER!!!

I also found this awesome article from 2005 about the use of Native American ethnic slurs as sport team names: 

Opponents say the word is an honorific, which is has never been and is not now. 

No Native person who has been called the R-word has ever said: ''Wow, they must think I'm a football player or a sport mascot or a person covered in red paint for war.'' It has always been a fighting word and has never been a compliment.

3) Auburn (11-1, 7-1, +16) -

This is what we were talking about:  
It is so hard to recognize everything that is wrong with college football, while also seeing how much passion people have for it.  All this over a leather, oblong-shaped ball!  Hurray for America!

And you know what else is fine?  Naming your sports teams after Tigers.  Tigers-Tigers in the SEC Championship!  (In fact - and I really hope it doesn't come to this - I might have to root for Auburn if they end up playing FSU in the national championship.)

7) Oregon (10-2, 7-2, +11) - The Ducks continued their weird late season regression, but still managed to hold on to a 36-35 win over Oregon State in the Civil War.  I truly think my weekend might have been ruined had they not scored with 29 seconds left to take the lead.  Instead, I can be thankful for the fact that the Ducks won 10 games, and won the Civil War, and will go to another decent bowl game, either the Holiday or the Alamo.  And that, even though the state of Oregon is not free of racism or Native American genocide, at least our team's mascot is not a symbol of white supremacy.  (And, as always, I give thanks that I am not from Alabama.) 

Meanwhile, the Ducks have to solve something before their bowl game.  Oregon State gained 6.3 yards per play against them.  This is more than Arizona (5.5) and Stanford (4.8).  And it points towards Oregon's disturbing trend of - for some reason - being absolutely helpless against the run during the month of November.  If they face a good Big 12 team - say, Oklahoma - this will be a major liability.

Auburn or Ohio State?

It's still early in the evening, but Auburn's amazing win over Alabama already has Twitter abuzz about whether or not 1-loss Auburn ought to jump 12-0 Ohio State in the BCS Rankings.  I actually have Stanford now #2, assuming that they beat Notre Dame tonight.  But I might also be OK with Auburn jumping the Buckeyes.  So, let's compare Auburn and OSU:

Things will continue to change.  My rule of thumb is that one loss is worth 7 SoS points, and Auburn's SoS is more than 8 points more difficult than Ohio State's.  The Buckeyes may be seriously punished by Wisconsin's loss today, which should mean that OSU ends the season with 0  wins against the Top 25, including 0 games higher than Auburn's one loss.  Furthermore, Auburn is 2-1 vs Top 25 and 4-1 vs Top 40, whereas Ohio State is 1-0 vs Top 25, 2-0 vs Top 40.  And, Ohio State's second best win is still against Buffalo, whereas Auburn's #1 win against Alabama, #2 vs. Georgia, #3 vs. Mississippi, and #4 vs. Texas A&M.  (Auburn is also 8-1 versus bowl eligible teams, compared to OSU's 6-0.) Basically, the fact that Auburn's fourth best win is against Texas A&M is why I would vote them ahead of the Buckeyes in the BCS.

Basically, any argument that Auburn ought to jump ahead of Ohio State also applies to the argument that Stanford ought to jump Auburn, especially if they all win their conferences.  Stanford is 4-0 against the top 25, 5-1 against the top 40, has 0 wins against the FCS, and convincingly beat Washington State when Auburn barely beat them.  Yes, they have that terrible road loss to #75 Utah.  But, consider this: Auburn's top five wins are: 2, 25, 37, 39, 56.  Stanford's are: 7, 14, 17, 23, 33.  (Ohio State's are: 21, 36, 41, 42, 56.)

Power Rankings - Nov. 24

1) Florida State (11-0, 8-0, +24) - I don't have the moral strength to talk about Jameis Winston and the ongoing rape investigation regarding him.  I would highly recommend you read Jessica Luther's piece here about the horrifying prevalence of rape and rape culture within college football.  

For my part - because I really can no longer stand the sadness - I want to talk about Florida.  The Gators lost to FCS Georgia Southern 26-20, their first ever loss to an FCS team, and this season will be the first time Florida does not qualify for a bowl game since 1990 and their first losing season since 1979.  Next week, Florida plays Florida State.  The Seminoles biggest win in this rivalry was 52-17, in 1988.  That FSU team went 11-1, finished the season ranked 3rd, and beat Auburn in the Sugar Bowl.  I bet they break that record this year.  

Basically, this is the remainder of Florida State's schedule:
2) Alabama (11-0, 7-0, +17) - Oh, God.  It's gotten to the point where I will be rooting for a team whose mascot is a racist caricature and whose quarterback and best player is under investigation for rape just because I hate Alabama just that much.  If the National Championship does come down to that, just know that I'll be watching at home, trying to make good things happen with my mind:
3) Stanford (9-2, 7-2, +16) - Oregon's major d'oh at Arizona handed the Pac-12 North title to Stanford for the second straight win.  The Cardinal beat Cal 63-13 in The Big Game, their biggest win in the 121 years of the rivalry.  The win also erases Stanford's loss at USC last week.  They're kind of backing their way into the championship.  Also, auf Deutsch:


4) Ohio State (11-0, 7-0, +14) - Patience is a virtue.  Be patient, and you will see Oregon go down.  And then Baylor.  And then you will get a Big Ten championship game against a very good Michigan State team.  And you will only need a little slip-up (Who knows how the Iron Bowl will go down?  South Carolina's gonna be a tough out in that Championship game.)  and suddenly, the same Ohio State Buckeyes that everyone has been counting out could be left standing in the championship game.  Patience is a virtue.

Or, whatever.  Rose Bowl is good, too.

5) Northern Illinois (11-0, 7-0, +13)

7) Oregon (9-2, 6-2, +10) - I have done much gnashing of teeth and rending of garments over the Ducks 42-16 road loss to unranked Arizona, their worst loss since the 2006 Las Vegas Bowl, which I watched from an opium-induced haze from a hospital bed in Portland.  Sure, this loss knocked the Ducks out of the Rose Bowl, and probably out of the BCS Bowls all together.  But it also might be a good wake up call for the program.  I still support coach Mark Helfrich, although I wish that he would run the offense faster than he does.  At the beginning of the season, there were questions about Oregon's defense, and now, at the end of the season, those look legitimate. (Sure, the offense struggled, but they didn't give up 42 points to a .500 team.)  The Ducks still have the Civil War and a bowl game ahead of them (maybe against Oklahoma?)   They also have two of the most talented players in all of football in Mariota and De'Anthony Thomas.  Hopefully, they should be back and better next year.

8) Auburn (10-1, 6-1, +10) - Could this be the biggest Iron Bowl ever?  The game that has produced the last four national champions could do it again, and this game is essentially a national quarterfinal.  The Tide should be pretty heavily favored, but Auburn should provide them with a unique challenge.  Against Georgia, the Tigers ran 57 times for 5.7 yards per carry.  In a loss at LSU, they ran 52 time for 4.1 yards per carry. Against Mississippi, they ran 48 times for 5.9 yards per carry.  They should present Alabama with their toughest offensive challenge of the season since the Aggies.

11) UCF (9-1, 6-0, +9) - Central Florida has two games left on their schedule: versus South Florida (2-8) and at Southern Methodist (5-5).  They just need to win one of those games to win the American Conference and secure a bid to a BCS game, most likely the Sugar Bowl against an SEC team.  (Missouri?)

12) Oklahoma State (10-1, 7-1, +9) - Oklahoma State handed Baylor their first loss of the season and, with a win in two weeks at Oklahoma, put themselves in position for a conference championship and a Fiesta Bowl berth.  The Big 12, however, may have a bit of a problem.  It will have 6 bowl eligible teams this season, and has 7 bowl tie-ins (Fiesta, Cotton, Holiday, Alamo, Buffalo Wild Wings, Pinstripe, Texas)  Odds are that the Pinstripe will replace a Big 12 team with Notre Dame, although I would like to see maybe the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl take a risk on Oregon State, if they could.

13) Baylor (9-1, 6-1, +8)

14) Arizona State (9-2, 7-1, +8) - The Sun Devils took all of the excitement out of the last weekend of Pac-12 football by beating UCLA, 38-33, and securing their first ever spot in the Pac-12 Championship game, against Stanford (who handed Arizona State their only Pac-12 loss, 42-28, in September.)  Arizona State has exactly one Rose Bowl win ever, a 22-15 win over Michigan in 1987.  The quarterback for that Michigan Wolverine team was former Stanford and current San Francisco 49er coach, Jim Harbaugh.  So, I bet he's rooting against ASU.

15) Michigan State (10-1, 7-0, +7) - I would love to see Michigan State play Texas A&M in, like, the Outback Bowl.  In their last five games, the Spartans have given up more than 6 points exactly once.  Also, I like to think that Mark D'Antonio will literally scoff at Johnny Manziel because he is not Johnny Unitas:

18) Oklahoma (9-2, 6-2, +5) - The Sooners are one of four Big 12 teams who could still conceivably win the Big 12 and a Fiesta Bowl bid.  However, I've got them pegged for the Holiday Bowl, against the Ducks.  And while I would love to see Oregon kick their butts, Oklahoma has the same formula that has handed Oregon their last two losses: An athletic and disciplined defense that can keep Oregon's skill players in front of them, and a tough, physical running game that can gain yards, not make mistakes, and keep Oregon's offense off the field.  Until the Ducks figure out how to deal with those types of teams, they could start seeing the losses start piling up.

19) Louisville (10-1, 6-1, +5) - On the one hand, it's too bad that one bad game has ruined Louisville's BCS chances.  On the other hand, I've got them in the Belk Bowl against Duke.  I love basketball-football games.

Power Rankings - Nov. 17

Several college football teams honored America's military on Saturday, wearing unique uniforms and raising money to support the Wounded Warrior Project.  And while the commercialism of these types of outpourings of patriotism may be new, the relationship between college football and the military is deeply engrained within the sport's DNA.  The original Morrill Land-Grant Act was passed in 1862, during the Civil War, and included a provision that all land-grant universities provide training for the reserve officer corps.  

1) Florida State (10-0, 8-0, +23) - There are a lot of weird problems with my rankings right now - the Pac-12 teams continue to be overrated because of early non-conference wins, NIU is too high, UCF is too high, et cetera - but one thing that's not a mistake is that Florida State is number one.  They beat Syracuse 59-3 without scoring in the fourth quarter, the fifth time this season that the Seminoles scored 50 or more points while holding their opponents to 10 or fewer.  

Florida State University was founded before the Civil War, and was used to train Confederate soldiers during the war.  Cadets from the university participated in the South's victory in the Battle of Natural Bridge in 1865, which kept Tallahassee out of Union hands. To this day, the Florida State ROTC displays a banner memorializing this victory over the United States of America and in defense of slavery. SoS: -19

 

2) Oregon (9-1, 6-1, +16) - The Ducks got back to business on Saturday, wearing Army Brown in their 44-21 win over Utah, behind a 19/26, 288 yard, 3 TD, 0 INT day from Marcus Mariota.  With Stanford's loss, Oregon controls their own destiny to the Rose Bowl, with remaining games at Arizona, the Civil War, and, if they win out, the Pac-12 Championship. They should be 5th in the BCS. 

Whereas violence, militarism, racism, and misogyny are not new college football, one thing is: the way in which private companies are profiting off of these ostensibly amateur football teams. No team represents this more purely than the Ducks.  Only 13% of the University of Oregon's funding comes from the state.  The rest comes from private sources, most notably Nike CEO Phil Knight and Business Wire founder Lorry Lokey. SoS: -18.8

3) Alabama (10-0, 7-0, +16) - Alabama didn't seem quite right against Mississippi State, turning the ball over four times and punting four times, but they still managed to win 20-7.  I don't see how anyone could rank them ahead of Florida State right now.  Nevertheless, if they can get an Iron Bowl win, and a SEC Championship, they will be playing for the National Championship. 

Like Florida State, the University of Alabama predates the Civil War, having been established in 1831. Also like Florida State, Alabama sits on land granted by the federal government, but taken from Native American tribes, in this case, the Muscogee Indians, who lost the land to Andrew Jackson in the Creek Indian Wars of 1813-1814. SoS: -19

4) Stanford (8-2, 6-2, +15) - I had the uncomfortable and unfamiliar experience of rooting for the hated Trojans against Stanford, but they obliged, getting their first win against Stanford since 2008, breaking the Cardinal's longest winning streak in the 108 year long rivalry.  There's a lot of terrible things about the Stanford Cardinal, née Indians, but by far the worst is that they currently employ war criminal, cultural imperialist, and college football super fan Condoleeza Rice.  She is my Exhibit A that the love of college football and the love of subjugation of autonomous peoples through violent means are inherently and inextricably connected. SoS: -6.9. Still ridiculously hard.  If Stanford's schedule is approximately four times harder than Ohio State's, does that mean they're allowed to lose 2 games and stay ahead of the Buckeyes? Does it mean anything that Stanford is 4-0 against the Top 25, but Ohio State is 1-0? I don't know.

5) Ohio State (10-0, 6-0, +13) - Is it weird that Illinois loses to Ohio State 60-35, and I'm kind of like, "Good for the Illini, née Fighting Illini, a.k.a. Pawnee Drunken Savages"?

6) Baylor (9-0, 6-0, +12) - I am fast becoming a Baylor fan, who spotted Texas Tech a 14-point lead before storming back to win, 63-34.  And besides, they have a pretty benign history, being an early supporter of coeducation and the liberal arts and their current president is ... Oh, fucking hell.  Never mind.

SoS: -23.556. The AP jumped Baylor over Ohio State, which I am fine with. With their win over Texas Tech, the Bears now have a resume that includes wins against No. 16 Oklahoma, No. 40 Buffalo, No. 55 Texas Tech, and No. 67 Kansas State. But Ohio State has wins against No. 22 Wisconsin, No. 40 Buffalo, No. 45 Penn State, and No. 47 Iowa. Really, I don't think there is any meaningful way to differentiate between the two right now.

7) Northern Illinois (10-0, 6-0, +12). - SoS: -36

8) Clemson (9-1, 7-1, +11) - Let me tell you the little story of Benjamin Tillman, he didn't like Black folks, he only liked to kill 'em. Couldn't fight for the South cause he only had one eye! But after the War, he made sure "those people" died! 

Anyway, fuck Benjamin Tillman. In 1876, he led a massacre of 7 Black national guardsmen in Hamburg, South Carolina. 14 years later, he was elected governor of South Carolina, running on a "lynch pledge."  He also "served" as South Carolina's Senator, during which he said things like, “The action of President Roosevelt in entertaining that n----- ( B.T. Washington) will necessitate our killing a thousand n-----s in the South before they learn their place again." What's that you say? What's the point?  Oh, right. He helped found Clemson University and was on its Board of Trustees.  Today, Clemson's Education department is housed in Tillman Hall, dedicated in 1946.

Clemson beat Georgia Tech, 55-31. SoS: -17.4

9) Auburn (10-1, 6-1, +10) - Auburn beat Georgia 43-38 on a miraculous Hail Mary in the last minute of play.  Auburn now gets to play Alabama at home in a winner take all Iron Bowl for the SEC West title.  The Tide should be favorites, but they should also be challenged by Auburn's running game. Georgia, meanwhile, has been finally eliminated from contention in the SEC East.  They are currently 6-4 overall, including 2-3 against Top 25 teams and 1-3 against teams named "Tigers". SoS: -17.818

10) Fresno State (9-0, 6-0, +9) - SoS: -31.667

11) UCLA (8-2, 5-2, +9) - 70 years ago, a series of riots in Los Angeles erupted when groups of White, World War II servicemen began attacking groups of young, Latino (mostly Mexican) and African American men.  The press dubbed these attacks the "Zoot Suit Riots," after the style of dress favored by young Mexican-Americans at the time.  (Like Black kids in hoodies today, the press of 1943 blamed the victims for wearing the outfit of "hoodlums" that caused them to be attacked.) The police refused to arrest servicemen, and, after several days of riots, more than150 people (mostly Latinos) had been injured and more than 500 people (almost entirely Latinos) had been arrested. From the L.A. Daily News: "The military staging area dumped thousands of out-of-town, white, testosterone-filled young sailors among thousands of young Latinos who had recently got work in the wartime economy and were more than willing to flaunt their newfound wealth."  So, yes, let's honor the military. Everyday should be Saturday, another day of state-sanctioned violence against brown bodies.

Anyway.  UCLA beat Washington 41-31. If they win out against Arizona State and USC, they win the Pac-12 South.  SoS: -15.4

12) Missouri (9-1, 5-1, +8) The Missouri Tigers had a bye week, and still control their own destiny with the ability to win the SEC East with wins over Mississippi and Texas A&M. 

The father of the University of Missouri was James S. Rollins.  While not the flaming asshole that Benjamin Tillman was, Rollins is, um, problematic.  He drafted the legislation that got Mizzou chartered in Columbia and, as a U.S. Representative, helped write the Morril Act in 1862.  Rollins was a Unionist dring the Civil War, but he was also a slaveholder, and generally opposed Civil/ Human Rights.  Eventually, after the personal intervention of Abraham Lincoln, Rollins agreed to support the Thirteenth Amendment that called for emancipation, and was instrumental in getting it passed through the war era Congress. SoS:-19.1
